Garmin has tried to keep it clean and simple with the Nuvi 1340T which does not offer anything out of the ordinary like most of the satellite based navigation systems in the market. It is just 15mm thick which is much slimmer than most other competing devices, though it hardly makes any difference when plugged into the car. However, when using it by hand when on foot, the slimmer design makes the world of a difference in terms of portability!

The display of the Nuvi 1340T is a 4.3 inch widescreen, wide enough to easily view the smallest details. Included are street level maps of Western Europe which feel very clean and uncluttered. The audio instructions are also very clear and timely. There is an option to either keep the standard voice command audio instructions or you can make the Nuvi read out names of streets to you using text to speech. The voice from the device tends to sound a bit rough when using the text to speech function but is nevertheless very useful.

A lane assist feature is very necessary in any modern sat-nav system as it is a life in large cities where reaching a place means navigating a maze of confusing lanes. The Garmin Nuvi 1340T also provides you with appropriate alternative routes in case you take a wrong turn. The device includes a safety camera which alerts you near speed checkpoints and also provides traffic warnings to allow you to skip overcrowded streets. The traffic warnings are provided by Traffic Master using an FM aerial which has to be attached to the windscreen by suction cups. I can’t even begin to tell you how useful the traffic warnings and lane assist feature has been for me when I was backpacking through Europe!

The device also features an excellent aspect called EcoRoute, which gives you a rough estimate of your spending on petrol and the amount of pollution your vehicle is causing. Garmin’s drive challenge is another part of the package, it analyses your driving skills based on acceleration, speed and braking and marks you out of 100; the higher your score, the more economical your driving style is deemed.

Overall, the Garmin Nuvi 1340T is a very likable navigation device that gets you from one point on the map to another and with a lot of ease at that. There are many useful features provided as well that will make your journey a much smaller chore than it usually is!
